Which SEO content marketing to use with SaaS?

SEO strategy for SaaS software and service has evolved a lot these last years; SaaS website used to be smaller making SaaS SEO easier. Google used to threat SaaS web pages like a phone book. No matter how small is your website, you will show on the search result if you have backlinks. Now, things has changed!

To reach your users through Google search result, you need not only relevance but also to build authority. Of course you need to be a real business, with Google map location, social media profiles and perfectly using you name as a branding. Google has a new set of requirements from businesses now which are called E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness). You want to be reachable from internet, that way Google knows that you are not some sort of a scam business that will disappear and appear again under a new set of names.

You need to cover at least 10 search results including the snippets:

  • Your landing page
  • Your Facebook page or profile
  • Your Youtube channel
  • Google maps
  • Google snippets
  • An online business directory or two
  • Twitter
  • LinkedIn
  • Instagram
  • Another social media website or an article from a news website

We won't dive into the E-E-A-T requirement, but you need to put in your footer and contact page, your real address, your real contact phone number and any other info proving you are a legit business.

Starting an SEO strategy for SaaS that way also helps protect your brand from any intruders because one day people will start searching on Google directly by typing your brand name. You would also purchase all domain names that can be typos, or that has keywords related to your business to minimize competition in that way.

Our general approach for SaaS SEO Page Optimization

We have a simple, yet powerful strategy for content marketing and how to optimize your SaaS website for On-page SEO to get a priceless source of free traffic. However, our guide is for the type of SaaS businesses that already has competitors even if they do not do the exact same thing.

Let say that you have a platform that stores files in type A formats; your competitors have a platform that stores images in B, C and D formats. The general idea here, is a platform that stores files of some kind of types. Because we assume you don't have huge resources, and you are not hiring one of the best SEO agencies, you won't try to create a new authority in Google Search Result. you want to do what your competitors has done, and what worked for them in a better way.

Our approach involves creating content, but it will be in the cheapest, yet efficient ways you can imagine. We will show you how to create the best SaaS SEO strategy without too much management, and with the minimum resources.

Optimizing landing page for Saas

In this section we will take a real SaaS example to analyse and show you our approach.
Let's say you are an SEO SaaS company, and you want to optimize your landing page. We will choose Page Optimizer Pro as our SEO SaaS target for this example.

You want to get their URL, and go to our SEO optimizer (you won't need to sign-up). Go to the insert section, and paste the URL:

insert url

After waiting for a few seconds, our SEO optimizer will create a new optimization based on the URL you've inserted:

create optimization

In fact, this optimization will provide you with all the guidelines you need to follow to get a better landing page. You will notice that you have three sections:

  1. HTML tags metrics, sentiment analysis, word count, keyword frequency etc.
  2. Titles and questions.
  3. Keywords, semantic keywords and NLP keywords.

In the right side you have the real-time content editor which is mainly made for writing articles, and following our guidelines at the same time.

You can export your text to an html file that includes all the HTML formatting you've done, but we know that for your landing page, you need to be creative in the design part.

Now that you have your SaaS SEO landing page optimization, you need to write content that respects those guidelines.

An important thing is about the branding: You will find your competitor's brand name, and all other branded keywords that search engine knows, and uses for the search result. You want to identify them!

For our example, we have 2 branded keywords:

  1. POP
  2. Kyle Roof

Note that they use only the initials as a brand name:

pop search

If you search for Page Optimizer Pro, you won't find it within the keywords.

no result

Now to make your own landing page, you should have a brand name of course. To optimize your landing page's On-page SEO, you will follow the guidelines, and at the very end of your writing, you would replace their brand name with yours.

Note that you don't have to get the full score, but try to get the maximum. A score greater than 75/100 is perfect for your landing page. For an article, you will need less than that, but let's stay focus on the landing page.

You want also to use the questions and titles inside your landing page, as they includes the sentence structure that Google clearly prefers for this type of SaaS SEO and what it expects you to cover.

How to create a topical map with our SEO optimizer?

A topic map (also known as a topical map) is essentially 'a graph' or graphical representation of the main topics, concepts and their relationships within. This is a way to organize and show information in hierarchy or in 'networks' such that users can understand the relationships between different elements, concepts or ideas within.

Let's get the main keywords that are brand related, and that can create the base of your future topical map:

  • Kyle Roof POP
  • Science POP
  • POP AI Writer
  • Roof POP Inventor
  • POP Reports
  • Minutes POP AI

We can clearly see that this brand is tightly related to Kyle Roof and AI technology because every time there was the POP brand name, either AI or Kyle Roof was there too.

Again to optimize your landing page according to our recommendations, get more that 75/100 score, and replace POP by your brand name. Of course there will be some things that you do and your competitor doesn't or vice versa; just concentrate on the global score and write at the same time what you want to transmit to your users.

Of course having a landing page won't be enough for your SaaS SEO to work because, as we've said before, you will need content, and not just any content; you need the right topical map that you will use it as a base to create all your articles.

Based on the keywords above, here are the main topics we can get:

  • Kyle Roof the creator of POP: life, experience, actualities, social media etc.
  • The science behind POP: theory, development, algorithms etc.
  • POP reports: tutorials, example reports etc.
  • POP and AI: AI writer, AI assistant etc.

So for this brand, we've found four main topics that you can use to develop your content creation.

To get the sub-topics, you can do the same exercise with each topic on our SaaS SEO optimizer tool. For each topic, you will find, let say six other sub-topics. In this case, you want to create a hub article for each sub-topic following the metrics that our SEO optimizer will provide, and for each hub, you will need to create a silo structure which means all topics around that sub-topic which are also called topic clusters.

The whole point, other than using our metrics, is that you must not write on topics of your choice, you need to respect a specific topic cluster that only an experienced SEO will show to leverage the SaaS market. By the time you progress in your content creation, and after covering all the existing topics in a better way, you can start then creating you owns. At that time it will be easier to direct traffic to one of your specific topics and to your landing page.

Ranking is about semantics; you need to respect all related articles based on the semantic keywords that you get from our optimization result after you've created an optimization with your competitor's brand name. You also have to respect the volume of terms that we suggest. It is a sort of a map that signals to Google that you're on the right path to create an authority, and Google love that because you are a free resource for them; by increasing your authority, you signal that they can rely on your content!

Why our approach will always work?

To create a brand name that will stand and get huge amount of traffic from Google, you need to create authority. This means a lot of things, but the must interesting one for us is to be able to answer people's  requests and questions not only through your services, but also through your content. This will involve creating tons and tons of content that will rank and that won't, making a lot of test and see how would Google will follow.

Check also our How does a paraphrasing tool affect SEO? page.

You can also check our free version of Seo Optimizer.

In the other hand, Google relies on signals to know if a website deserves an authority. If you already have competitors, this means that they already have created authority, and they have already done what you wish to do. It is possible to use your own ways to create bigger authority, but as we've said before this requires a lot of resources.

Spying on your competitor in a SaaS SEO oriented approach is very difficult to do manually. It requires metrics and calculating which our SaaS tool does for you. In the recent SEO updates, you can check that Google relies more and more on semantics and topics to give you authority. Think of your website as a mall with Google's specifications; malls may differ in some aspects but in general they have a lot in common. Only that Google is very specific, and when they ask for a mall for their users, they won't take the grocery store or the stock market.

(Check our article on how to make )

How does our SaaS SEO optimization help in semantics?

Google is a semantic search engine, and to give them the signal they require to rank you, you need to have:

  • The right topical map
  • The right sub-topics and silos (articles around every sub-topic)
  • The right On-page SEO optimization including NLP keywords and semantic keywords

You can see why it is impossible to do the right SEO research manually, and even with using tools like Ahrefs or Semrush; they give you metrics that you would use in your after ranking, and won't help you too much for your SaaS SEO strategy.

To get the same result manually, you need a strong knowledge of the NLP (Natural Language Processing) that is search engine oriented. Our can make your job very easy, and very cheap to make the best SaaS SEO strategy. You just need writers that you'll manage with no efforts because you have all the guidelines that they need.

How to do internal linking in your topic cluster?

Internal linking is very important not only in SaaS SEO strategy but in SEO in general. It is tightly related to you topic cluster. If you think about that logically, you want to use internal linking for one of the situations:

  • Get the reader to see more about that topic
  • Direct the user to a web page to make an action

In the topic cluster, you want to link the cluster pages in this way:

internal links cluster

This is the way that Google discovers websites, and the more your clusters are relevant the more you will rank for more keywords. This is why you should user our SEO optimizer to get what is relevant for each main keyword you optimize for, to create the right cluster and to use semantic keywords with NLP keywords.

How to create content for your SaaS business?

After defining your topical map, sub-topics and silos as we've show you in the above section, it is time to make the writing. You have to choose one main keyword for each one of your articles. Our SEO optimizer will help you in both those situations:

  • There are already articles for your main keyword
  • It is a new keyword, and you wish to rank for it

In the first case you just follow the guidelines; we make all needed researches and previsions in our servers to give you the needed metrics to create a better article.

In the second case, you will be able to leverage the existing Google search result by following our guidelines and including your new keyword in the headers and description. You want always to create a semantically more relevant content, so always leverage what's existing and add what is specific to you on top of that.

Remember to use our titles and questions, as they suggested by Google too, and using them means that you are relevant in the eyes of Google. It also means that you put yourself in the right boilerplate before trying to beat your competitors even when using new keywords.

Now let say that you want to outsource the writing on a service like Fiveer or Upwork; you can follow those steps:

  1. Create your optimization with the main keyword
  2. Check titles and questions and add what you can to the editor
  3. Add your note like the metrics you insist on or any other notes
  4. Export your whole project to our FSS format
  5. Send this file to your writer, and send him our SEO optimizer URL

Your writer would write your article in the content editor, and then export the project and send it to you. You'll be able to check how the work was than by checking the score.

Using our SEO optimizer will help you outsource a lot of articles at the same time, and it gives you all what you need to manage that. This way, you will also benefit from the possibility to do the job with a cheaper price, as you don't require a writer with an SEO skills, or an SEO agency.
